There is already a option to select "windows vista" as compatibility for windows 7.
Right click setup file -> properties -> compatibility
If you still having problem related to compatibility in windows 7, Microsoft has released a update for such issues.

I thought windows7 was based on the Windows vista. The applications should be perfectly compatible. BUt hope it won't be plagued as much as vista at its release.

Atleast windows 7 beta is rocking. So, its final version should also rock :)

Yeah! Many people are saying that it will be the next windows XP. Hope it is. Keeping fingers crossed.

its better in comparison with vista...but have a missing feature of 3-D rotating :D but overall much better performance...

^^ You mean Flip-3D??? That was a crappy feature. How many Vista users use that feature anyway? It was just bling-2...

It seems Microsoft has learnt the lesson from Vista compatibility woes as they have introduced a new Wizard to solve compatibility issues in Windows 7. No more such nightmares in Windows 7 as you have Windows Program Compatibility troubleshooter.
To run Windows Compatibility Troubleshooter wizard, type in Action Center in Start menu search box and hit enter. Then in the left pane of the Action Center, click on the link labeled Windows Compatibility Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooting wizard.
No more such nightmares in Windows 7, thanks to Windows Program Compatibility wizard that assists to solve most of the Windows compatibility issues.

Windows 7 is very much compatible with old hardware also ..
