I bought a laptop used over a year ago, and have increased the amount of ram by 256mb. Previously it only had 512mb and was extremely slow.

The biggest issue I face is virtual memory, with Firefox, the majority of it is focused there.

So, the maximum my laptop can support is 2GB of DDR memory and I'm wondering if it's wise to upgrade to that much to compensate for the VM issues.

Yes, increasing RAM is a good idea.
You can also refer here for some good tips to reduce memory usage by FF.

Thank you Ravi. It looks more complicated than I'm sure it is. I would guess that starting a new Firefox session is something I really should consider doing on occasion.

Problem with that is, I don't always have my pages bookmarked, and don't want to forget where I was if I haven't done so.

This is an older laptop, going on 6 years old, so I guess there could be other issues with it as well.

Hi,

The only one solution to solve this Virtual machine issue, you have to increase the “Ram”. You can define the Virtual Memory value from:
“Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> click System -> Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings”
But it will not solve this problem because you can define double value of the current “Ram”, which is really low.
