PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated.
PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in Google search results. It isn't the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

well Google page rank is far better than alexa ranking for sure...
But it is too not reliable....

http://www.something.com -->it has a page rank of 5.... :o

yaa..something.com has PR4..but have no content.
This is worst rule of google. They give PR on basis of backlinks.

page rank provides information on the importance of the web page. The lesser the number the higher the rank.

Many broker for paid post , link sale , and some other internet program using pagerank as a level of assesment. The higher pagerank the higher the value of your blog or site.

Yeah but i find it very selfish for google to rate themselves as rank 10 and rate all the other major search engines 9 or lower. I havent found another site that has a pagerank of 10 .Even yahoo and msn are rated with a pagerank of 9.

Well,
the rank of page provides information on the importance of the Web page. Less the number plus the row is high.

Google rates themselves as PR10 because they want people to think they are the best and most popular.
Mos tpeople sell sites or blogs and contain information like "Selling blog PR7" or soemthin. It increases the price and value of it because people are constantly going and joining. But all this doesn't really tell the true traffic about the site. It's just a ranking.
