Sure..
I feel that the free antivirus is not inferior when compared to the paid one..

I am using Avast right now and i'm satisfied with it....I have never been infected by virus due to it...It's light to my system, does not slow down the system during scanning, virus DB updates are released frequently....

I have read somewhere that the response time in case of new virus info in avast is less that even the paid antivirus's.....

So +1 to free anti virus in general and Avast in particular

Its not so that Indians always go for Free ones first. If the freewares works nice then why to go for paid ones just for Brand names of having the paid one as it happens in foreign. After using Avavst Home edition i never feel to go for having a paid Antivirus anymore.

Since we have nothing much to update lately on the happenings of the HYI arena (apart from sad E-gold updates and crumbling ponzis), we’ll touch more on the security of your PC.

So there are people who pay for antiviruses and those who don’t. What’s the difference anyway? Why pay should the free ones be good enough to fend off those nasty codes?

I’ve googled and found some interesting articles which are worth reading when comparing with free ones from paid ones.

http://www.techsupportalert.com/free-vs-paid-av.htm

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread78213.html

Now let’s come back to Nobs, personally I’m paying Norman anti-virus (which is two of the highly recommended AV a year ago, the other is Nod32), have 3 licenses running at home, one for my laptop, and two desktops.

I’ve installed Avast! Home Edition Antivirus (free) as well for another 3 PCs at home running XP Pro. Is there a big difference between two of the AVs (free or paid)? The answer is really no. The effectiveness of your free AV can be as good as your paid ones.

What really matters to me on the antivirus I use, the utilisation of system resource, is it memory hogging, and the detection of latest virii if I happen to surf on an infected site/ or an email comes with an infected attachment. Norman suits me, and so does the Avast! free version.

If you compare the difference of the Avast! Pro version, and the Avast! Home version (free), the only key difference is there’s a script blocker and interface is enhanced on the pro version. Well, the anti-virus kernel used, is generally the same and they share the same virus definition updates daily.

It’s up to each person’s comfort level whether to pay for a licence, or not to. To me it’s not much of a difference at all if you know how to layer your system with the right free security tools that are available on the internet (Anti Spyware, Antivirus, Rootkits and more, we’ll touch on these some other days)

When Compared to Paid ones there will be more features in paid ones other than only scanning and some minor jobs which is done by free ones But Free one is enogh for home purpose .
But if u want to run a huge institution i prefer to use a paid one because it saves my PC and Institution from Major virus and many more

lol....do you mean that free anti virus only protects from minor viruses...lemme tell that the virus updates are more often released in free anti virus than those of paid alternatives...

But there will be a big problem If U use a free anti virus edition for a big institution which requires more safety

I think paid anti-virus is better. You don't need to buy the most expensive one, but a paid anti-virus will make updates more often than free anti-virus (most update even once a day). So it protects you from the new viruses quicklier.

I'm currently using BitDefender. I keep my computer running at night, and at this time, the anti-virus automatically scans it for viruses. So no extra time for clicking, etc. It also updates itself whenever a new version is available (usually every day).

My last anti-virus was MacAffee or something like that. It showed me a pop-up whenever a new update was available (every day), and I had to download it manually. And I had to click on 'scan my computer' everytime I wanted it scanned.

So I suggest you buy an anti-vrius like BitDefender. Or some other one. BitDefender is very good and not expensive, tough.

its pretty simple if it is free then it will be beta version or full features will not be available. Ofcourse nothing comes free in this world.

Well I would say the only differente between them is the Money $$ the price..you can find a lot of free antivirus out there to protect your important files. I remember when I bought my laptop it came ith a 6 months free license but and the end I had to pay for the upgrade. Then I changed to a free antivirus (http://www.zenok.com/free-antivirus/) version and I have no complains so far.

I don't see any difference with the paid and free AV.. although with the free AV..constant update is a must..but it isn't trouble at all for it updates by itself.

Many people are still not clear what the difference between professional and free antivirus software. I dont find any..I dont get why people pay for something is already free, for example I use ZenOK Free Antivirus on my computer and I haven't really done an objective comparison but what I know my pcs stays cleaned

Based on my experience whether you are using a free or paid anti virus, its really how you use the internet and how secure your pc and files are. Ive experienced free anti virus in back when I was in the office and a paid one at here at home, you can get a virus if you arte not careful enough regardless of paid or free anti virus.

The two has its differences. Paid anti virus has lot of features that can help to protect your pc while free is only limited..
