SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer.

Means your data between your PC and their server will be encrypted ( Jumbled up ) so no one else can see your card number.

NOTE: the company you are buying from still will have your card details..

Please make sure they are a legit company and that you trust them.

If they have SSL you SHOULD get a small padlock icon on the bottom right hand corner of your browser.

( Will probably come on when you get to the page where you would enter the card details. )

Not just look for the lock icon..but double click to verify that it is from the original publisher...
In FF you will get the warning if the SSL is expired or not able to verified... 8-)

yes.
It puts another layer on top of the ordinary security settings. (encryption).

The shop with which you are making transactions will have your card details.
Unless and Until their server is perfectly administered, anyone can get the raw data. i've seen that. It's real simple. Going to an admin area on their site (which is 50+% unprotected will show you the details of transactions made in their site).

So, SSL means that you are protected WHILE making the transaction, BUT DOES NOT mean that YOU ARE TOTALLY PROTECTED

Yeah you have mentioned it very well. SSL is meant for the security in the transaction things. I have seen this SSL features in many of the websites which deals with payment processor.

Mostly SSL links are 128bit encrypted. Its not a very easy task to get into that layer. Theorotically its possible but actually the chances are so meagre that you an consider yourself to be VERy VERY safe.
