What should every computer owner know to do? How to do it in the easiest way? Here are some very handy, easy and usable tips.
Please note: these tips are very basic. Many of you may already know most or all of them. However, I'm posting this for those who don't.
Installing fonts
1. Most fonts come in .zip, .rar or similar archive. First, let's unzip them and place them on your desktop (or in an easy-to-find folder).
2. Than, go to your computer control panel. If your computer automatically opens the category view, change it to classical view.
3. Click the Fonts icon.
4. Browse File...Install a new font. Now, in the little screen browse to the folder where you saved the fonts (dekstop, or any other folder you used in the 1st step).
5. Choose the fonts to install and click Install.
(The exact text that appears on the screen may differ, for example, you may have OK instead of Install. I don't know your computer. But I hope you can at least get the point of this tip anyway.
Finding out type of a file
1. Sometimes, you need to know what the type of some file is, but cannot find it anywhere. Well, now you can. So browse to the folder where the file is stored.
2. Right click the document (this is assuming you have a right-hand computer mouse).
3. Choose Use for opening...Choose a program.
4. You will see the whole filename in the top of the pop up window. =)
Keeping the file sizes as small as possible
1. Resize any image files that you want to keep, but will not need in the resolution this big as current. For example, you're using it in a Word document. You make the picture smaller in the document, but it's bigger on the computer. Why not make it smaller if we don't need it this big?
2. Older Word (or other) documents may still be handy sometimes, so you don't want to delete them. But you can still remove all those fancy text colors, and different fancy schmancy effects you won't need for now.
3. If your picture is small, or for any other reason doesn't need to be the best quality possible, save it in worse quality than usual. This is only possible for some formats in some programs, tough.
4. Choose the right format for some file. When you save a file, you can choose a format for it - some formats will take less space. Discover, which of the formats take the lowest space, and use them more often!
5. When you're using something as a background or repeating pattern (desktop, website, etc.) you don't need a 500 x 500 picture to display your pattern. Save it in small size, such as 50 x 50, or 100 x 100 (depends on the pattern), and set it on repeat option.
Hope anyone gets some use of these tips!!!
