Design a Clock icon in photoshop

Today we will design a nice looking clock icon in Adobe photoshop. You can download the layered PSD file and PNG file of the icon at the end of tutorial.

Difficulty: Intermediate
Completion time: 15-30 minutes.
Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Final Icon

Before I start the tutorial, lets see the final image of the icon we will design in this tutorial.

Step 1:

Create a new document of size 512 X 512px and transparent background.

Create a new layer and name it as circular. Select “Ellipse tool“.

Press and hold shift key (to make uniform) and draw a circular shape of color #dedede

Step 2:

Press and hold CTRL key and click on circular layer. This will load the circular shape.

Create a new layer and names it as stroke. Now go to Edit >> Stroke and apply a stroke as shown below.
Color: #323232
Width: 16px
Location: Outside

Step 3:

Select circular layer and apply following layer style from blending options.

So, it looks like this now.

Now press down arrow on keyboard 2 times to move the circular shape little downward. So, it looks like this now.

Step 4:

Again load circular shape. Create a new layer. Select Elliptical marquee tool with Intersect with selection.

Now select upper half of the circular shape.

Only upper half will be selected.

Create a new layer and name it as Top Half. Fill the selection with white color. Change the layer mode to “Soft Light” and Opacity to 60%.

So, it looks like this now.

Step 5:

Create a new layer and select Line Tool.

With 4px width and #333333 color draw four small bar as shown below.

Step 6:

Create a new layer. Using custom shape tool draw three arrows for Hour, Minute and Second hand as shown below. Put a small dot at intersection point in color #8b8b8b All three arrow should intersect at center of circular shape.
Color of hour and minute hand should be #333333 and color of second hand should be #9a1818

This is how it looks now.

Step 7:

Now we will add a small shadow at bottom of clock. Create a new layer. select “Ellipse tool” and draw a elliptical shape in black color just below the clock as shown in below image.

Apply Motion Blur (Filter >> Blur >> Motion Blur).

And now apply Gaussian Blur (Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur).

Free transform (CTRL + T) the shape and stretch to both side.

Change opacity to 50%. Our clock icon is ready.
